A native of North Carolina, "Phil" graduated from Mars Hill College with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, and earned his Master of Music degree in Conducting Performance from the University of North Texas at Denton.
He began his professional conducting career with the Fort Worth Men’s Chorus, where he began to build a national reputation as a master of conducting technique. He then became the Artistic Director of Tampa Bay Gay Men’s Chorus and later was asked to assume the position of Principal Conductor of Crescendo: Tampa Bay Women’s Chorus. In addition, he was the Conductor for Bay Bridges Chorale.He later assumed the position of Artistic Director for Una Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale, and was honored with the title of Conductor Emeritus.
His conducting has been described in the press as “Gifted artistry.”
He is currently employed as Director of Choral Activities at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, and is Staff Development Coordinator for the high school choral division of Wake County Public Schools. He also serves as pianist for Wake Forest Christian Church in Wake Forest, NC.
Mr. Mullinax is a member of GALA Choruses, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia,
the North Carolina Music Educators Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.
